A man shot and killed himself before his SUV flipped over into a ditch along Route 695 in Camillus around 9:30 Sunday night, police said.
Camillus Police Chief Thomas Winn said the man suffered a single, self-inflicted gun shot wound but would not say where the man shot himself or with what type of gun.
No one else was in the vehicle, and Winn said no other drivers were in harm's way during the accident.
"We're fortunate this was a single vehicle incident, no other motorists were involved," Winn said. "If it did happen at another time of day or another day of the week other people could have been hurt and there certainly would have been traffic consequences as a result of this incident."
Winn said the man's identity is being withheld while next of kin is notified, and would not say how old the man was or whether he is from the area.
A portion of Route 695 was shut down as investigators canvassed the crash scene, diverting traffic to Route 5 in Fairmount, near Wegmans. The highway was reopened overnight.
Winn, who has been a police officer for nearly 25 years, said he has never seen anything like this before.
"It's very sad and unfortunate that this person decided to end his life in this fashion. Our police officers and fire fighters that respond to these things often take them to heart," he said.
