Man who slipped handcuffs and stole police car gets 5 year sentence

Daniel Kantak at sentencing.

The man who was able to magically slip his handcuffs and steal a police cruiser from the backseat was sentenced to 5 years in prison Friday.

Daniel Kantak simply apologized for his actions at his sentencing in Judge Aloiâ??s court. The judge had a bit of advice for Kantak, saying â??Next time youâ??re in a police car, stay in the back seat.â??

Kantak was in handcuffs in the backseat of a locked police cruiser as officers investigated a burglary call when he slipped the cuffs and managed to squeeze into the front seat of the cruiser.

The officers were interviewing the burglary witnesses when they heard squealing tires and saw their cruiser speeding down Ashdale Avenue.

Officers were unable to catch up with Kantak. A short time later, the police cruiser was found crashed on Court Street, near Assumption Cemetery. Kantak had hit a utility pole and knocked power out to the area.

After a week on the run, Kantak turned himself in. He was being held on a staggering $1 million cash, $2 million bond bail.
