Man who threw dog out window to get out of jail

Ricky Coleman

A man who admitted to throwing a dog out of a fourth floor window will not serve any more jail time for his crime.

In June of 2010, Ricky Coleman of Syracuse was arrested for throwing "Peggy", a one-year-old Pit Bull, out of an apartment window during an argument with his girlfriend.

Thursday morning, Coleman was sentenced in Syracuse City Court to six months in jail for a guilty plea to charges of animal cruelty. Since Coleman has been held in jail since his arrest in June, he will be released with the time already served.

Peggy underwent surgery for broken legs at DeWitt Animal Hospital, and has since recovered.

The DeWitt Animal Hospital says surgery to repair Peggy TMs most severe injuries was successful. Eight pins have been used to save the dog's right rear leg. Veterinarians at the animal hospital are expecting her to make a full recovery.

Earlier this week the Central New York community rallied around Peggy, donating $5,000 to the hospital to help pay for her care.

An update on the story of "Peggy", the one-year-old pit bull who was thrown out of an apartment window last week.

The DeWitt Animal Hospital says that it has reached its goal of $3,000 in donations for Peggy's required surgery. The hospital says the donations came in very quickly through both local businesses and individuals. Hospital staff stay they are overwhelmed with the support they have received since Peggy's story received attention on Monday.

Peggy's surgery is scheduled for Tuesday. She is listed in stable condition and will undergo an orthopedic procedure on her right rear leg. If this is unsuccessful, the hospital says the veterinarian will have to amputate the leg.

They say they do notice that Peggy is feeling better, and they are expecting a good outcome.

Monday's coverage: Man arrested for throwing dog out 4th floor window

A local man has been arrested after police say he threw a dog out of a window last week.

According to Syracuse Police spokesman Sgt. Tom Connellan, 20-year-old Ricky Coleman of Syracuse is accused of throwing a pit bull named "Peggy" out of a fourth floor window at 1809 East Fayette Street on the city's east side. Police say the incident took place while Coleman was allegedly arguing with his girlfriend, who is the owner of the dog.

Coleman has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty and criminal trespass. He was ordered held at the Onondaga County Justice Center jail on $10,000 bail pending a preliminary hearing. It couldn't be immediately determined if he had a lawyer.

Last Friday morning around 7:30 officers were called to the apartment by a construction worker performing renovations in the building. The worker says he saw someone throw the dog out of a window and onto the street below.

Peggy was found alive, but suffered serious injuries. She is currently receiving care at the DeWitt Animal Hospital on Thompson Road for two broken legs, which will require surgery. The hospital says the treatment will cost $3,000, money Peggy's owner does not have.

The hospital is soliciting donations to help defray the cost of Peggy's care.
