Marine from Ithaca critically injured in Afghanistan attack

A Marine from Ithaca was critically injured in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan.

According to information provided by his family, Marine Corps Corporal Christopher Bordoni was critically hurt on January 18 while serving in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province.

The 21-year-old was on patrol in the Kajaki district when a suicide bomber on a motorcycle blew himself up. Several civilians, military personnel and police were injured or killed in the attack.

Bordoni was taken to a hospital in Germany and then transferred to the San Antonio Military Medical Center where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Bordoni grew up in the Ithaca area and graduated from Ithaca High School before joining the Marine Corp. He was deployed to Afghanistan in April 2011 and was hoping to return during the first week of February of this year. This was his second deployment to Afghanistan.

The Tompkins County Trust Company has set up a fund to collect donations to support Bordoni and his wife Jessica.
