Former Gov. Mario Cuomo is helping the Oneida Indian Nation celebrate the 20th anniversary of the compact that led to New York's first Indian casino.
Cuomo appears in a video with Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter being shown Tuesday at a celebration at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in central New York. Cuomo helped negotiate the 1993 deal with the Oneidas, and he praised the collaboration in the video.
The former governor's video appearance comes as his son, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, promotes a state constitutional amendment that would allow expansion of full casino gambling beyond Indian lands. The proposal has gotten a chilly reception from New York's Indian tribes.
The Oneidas say their casino has generated $155 million in income, property and sales tax revenue for the community since 1993.
