Mastercard phone scam targeting Cayuga County neighbors

If you've gotten a phone call recently, with a recorded message telling you your Mastercard has been locked because of fraudulent activity, hang up right away.

That's the warning from the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office which says it's received complaints from numerous neighbors in our area.

Investigators say it's a scam, and not to give out any information during the phone call.

The recording says: "Your Mastercard has been locked due to fraudulent activity, press 1 to unlock it."

Investigators say thousands of these calls are made every day.

If you do take such a phone call, the Sheriff's Office says there's no need to report it to authorities, unless you're being further victimized.
