Middlefield man pleads guilty to manslaughter in shooting death of his father

Michael Buck

A 34-year-old man has pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge for killing his father during a shootout at the house they shared in upstate New York.

The Daily Star of Oneonta reports that Michael Buck pleaded guilty Wednesday in Otsego County Court to first-degree manslaughter for killing 65-year-old Joseph Buck last Sept. 21 at their home in the rural town of Middlefield.

The younger man had been charged with second-degree murder and assault. In exchange for pleading guilty to the lesser charge, he'll be sentenced Aug. 4 to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors say the men got into an argument during which Michael Buck fired a handgun at his father, who got his own handgun and fired back. During the shootout, the father died and his son suffered a facial wound.
