The Salvation Army says the number of people signing up for Christmas Bureau Distribution day has increased this year.

Executive Director Linda Wright says last year, about 2500 families signed up. This year, the Salvation Army surpassed that number Thursday. By the time all registration is finished, the Salvation Army expects about 3,000 families to sign up. That's about 10,000 people.

Wright says the need in the community seems greater than ever, and the Salvation Army's food pantry has also seen an increase.

Gwendolyn Moore was at this year's signups to get presents for her eight children.

"Everybody runs into a struggle, so this is a big help, a blessing to the ones who can make some use of it."

Christmas Bureau Distribution registration ends at 4p.m. Friday at the Oncenter in Syracuse. Christmas Bureau Distribution day will be held next Thursday. Families can receive a book, toy, and stocking stuffer for each child in their family.

They will also receive a holiday food basket that contains a holiday meal and extra food to help them feed children during a school break.
