Must see NYC storm video & pictures

New York City was crushed by a line of severe thunderstorms that smashed through the Big Apple during the afternoon rush on Thursday. Just after 5:00pm, a line of damaging winds, near zero visibility in torrential downpours, lightning, thunder and hail passed over sections of Staten Island, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Trees were blown down over roads, cars, and train tracks. This caused 1 death, lots of damage, plenty of LIRR train delays, and traffic delays.

Must see videos of the storm as it approached New York city and asit crossed Brooklyn were captured and posted on You Tube. Caution: The second video has strong language by the videographer. Notice the green skies in the first video! Quite often, violent weather from strong or severe thunderstorms are proceeded by a greenish hue inside clouds. After doing some research, there is not a completely known reason why this occurs. However, a couple of websites agree that skies turn green because of the interaction of the tall thick thunderstorm clouds block out some of the other colors that some of the sunlight produces. For more on this green sky explanation, click here and here. By the way, during the Labor Day storm of 1998, even though it occurred during the middle of the night, there were reports of green skies.

There are a ton of great photos of the storm itself and storm damage. I have included some of them in the slideshow. Many of these pictures are from this website. However, the New York Times has a whole page dedicated to the storm.

I have also included a Doppler Radar recap of the storm inside of the slideshow of pictures above, as well. You can see the storm progression between 5:20pm and 5:50pm. Note the red line of heavy weather first over Staten Island at 5:20pm. That red line of heavy winds and rain "bows" out by 5:50pm east of Queens and into Nassau county. Bowing echoes like this very often indicate a damaging line of thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service that services the New York City area will be sending a storm survey team out Friday morning to see whether the damage was from a tornado or straight line winds. You can check here to see what they report.

Initial storm reports can be found here and are listed below:
