NASCAR driver Tony Stewart strikes and kills 20-year-old driver in Canandaigua

The Ontario County Sheriff's Department says Kevin Ward, Jr. was killed in Saturday night's race in Canandaigua.

NASCAR star Tony Stewart is being investigated after he hit and killed another driver at a dirt track race in Canandaigua.

20-year-old Kevin Ward, Jr. of Port Leyden was hit by Stewart after exiting his car, seemingly to confront the veteran driver. Ward was taken to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival.

"I don't want things taken out of context," said Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero. "I want to make it very clear that with this investigation, as in any death investigation, we are going to sit down with the district attorney his staff and review when the investigation's complete. We are not making any inferences of any criminal conduct at all."

Stewart was planning to race in this afternoon's NASCAR event at Watkins Glen, but has since change his mind. He'll be replaced by Cato native Regan Smith.

No charges have been filed at this time.
