Neighbor jumps fence to save drowning man in Liverpool

A Costa Rica man is in critical condition at a Syracuse-area hospital, recovering after nearly drowning in a pool Monday morning.

The Onondaga County Sheriffâ??s Department says Pablo Umana, 44, was visiting family members in Liverpool.

When family members heard a splash, they ran out to the pool and found Umana at the bottom.

Deputies say a neighbor, Michael Vaughn, heard their screams for help. He jumped a 6-foot tall wooden fence into the pool area and pulled Umana from the water.

Other neighbors helped perform CPR until emergency personnel arrived.

According to investigators, Umana had asked family members if he could go swimming. They told him to wait a little while until they could join him, because they werenâ??t sure whether Umana knew how to swim. They say they heard the splash a little after that conversation.

The Onondaga County Sheriffâ??s Office is continuing to investigate.
