New details are emerging in the case of Sheena Morris, a Central New York native who died in a Florida hotel room on New Year's Day 2009.
The Bradenton Beach Police Department in Florida, where Sheena lived since 2005, ruled her death a suicide. Family and friends, however, are convinced Sheena was murdered.
Now, a team of experts from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will work to determine if the local police department performed a complete investigation.
Family and friends see this as a step closer to finding justice for Sheena, but her loss still remains fresh.
"I miss her a lot," said close friend Kasey Helm. "Not a day goes by that I don't think about her. It took me, you know, three years to go visit her because I didn't want to believe it. You know, it's a good friend that died and a crime that shouldn't have been committed."
For Sheena's father, the ordeal has also been extremely difficult. "Of course, it's been a complete nightmare," said David Morris. "I mean, it's bad enough that you lose your daughter, your only child. But at the same time, you have all this resistance from the police department."
The family is reaching out to the community for support. Last weekend, many came to the Onondaga Lake Parkway in Liverpool to support bringing justice to Sheena's case.
Sheena's father said the ultimate goal is to have the FBI re-open the investigation. The medical examiner officially changed Sheena's cause of death from suicide to undetermined in 2011, but the family is convinced that Sheena was murdered by her boyfriend.
Right now, Sheena's loved ones are trying to collect 10,000 signatures on a petition in an attempt to have the case re-investigated.
