Onondaga County Sheriff's investigators are revealing new information about a head on crash that killed a man. This afternoon, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Deputies responded to Bartel Road at the Interstate 81 overpass in Brewerton to investigate a head on collision involving a vehicle and a motor home.
Investigators say a man driving a Volkswagon Jetta was traveling east bound on Bartel Road when his vehicle crossed over into the west bound lane of traffic and into the path of a 2007 Freightliner motor-home style vehicle being operated by Daniel Vauter, 28 Clifford Township, PA, along with his passenger Brian McCarthy, 28 of Waymart PA.
The impact from the collision caused extensive damage to both vehicles and scattered debris all over the roadway.
The male occupant of Volkswagon was extricated from the vehicle by members of the Brewerton Fire Department and was then transported to University Hospital by TLC Ambulance Service. The male, who name is being withheld pending next of kin notification, died a short time after arriving at University Hospital. Vauter and McCarthy were not injured in the collision.
Witnesses tell deputies that the male occupant of the Volkswagon vehicle appeared to be looking down prior to his vehicle crossing over into the west
bound lane of traffic and striking the motor home. The posted speed limit on that stretch of Bartel Road is 45 mph.
