New Hartford grad arrested for murder of Brockport student

Monroe County Sheriff's say an arrest has been made in connection with the death of a College at Brockport female student Saturday morning.

Clayton Whittemore, 21, of New Hartford, was arrested at a rest stop on the Thruway in Dewitt and charged with second degree murder. Whittemore was believed to be the boyfriend of the victim, whose name has not been released.

Sheriff's say the victim's mother was trying to get a hold of her, when she could not, she called the College at Brockport wellness center, and police found the victim around 3 a.m. in her dorm room in McLean Hall. She had extensive trauma to her upper body.

Brockport students were notified by the Chief Communications Officer around 5:30 a.m., and were assured there was no reason to believe that any other members of the campus community were in danger. See the message to the students below.

"This morning, a female student was discovered deceased under suspicious circumstances by University Police officers. At this point, there is no reason to believe that any other members of the campus community are endangered in any way. University Police is being assisted by the Monroe County Sherriffâ??s Department in this investigation. The thoughts and prayers of the entire College at Brockport community are with the family and friends of this student.

More details will be communicated as they become available."

Counselors have been made available at the University, and have been meeting with students throughout the day.
