New Hartford teen charged with DWI after crashing into police car

A New Hartford teen is accused of driving drunk after he crash into a police vehicle early Saturday morning in Utica.

Utica Police say an officer was on patrol Saturday morning around 3:30 a.m. when his vehicle was struck by a vehicle speeding down Kossuth Avenue at the intersection of Albany Street.

Police say that when the officerâ??s vehicle came to a stop, he got out of the car and saw the other vehicle continue down Kossuth Avenue.

The officer ran over to the vehicle, but there was no one inside.

Police say the officer checked the area and saw a man walking from behind a restaurant. The man put his hands in the air and gave up. He was later identified as Vadim Mikhalevich, 19, of New Hartford.

Police say that, during the accident investigation, they became concerned about Mikhalevichâ??s ability to drive. They conducted a sobriety investigation and he was charged with DWI.

Mikhalevich was charged with DWI, DWAI, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, all misdemeanors. He was additionally charged with speeding and passing a red light.

The officer was injured in the collision and was taken to St. Elizabeth's for treatment. Both cars suffered extensive damage.
