New phone extortion scam pops up in Syracuse

Syracuse Police are warning neighbors of a telephone scam that's been popping up in Central New York.

In each instance, the call is from an unknown man described to have a heavy Hispanic accent. He tells the victims that one of their loved ones has suffered some sort of tragedy.

The caller then demands money. He asks to have money brought to him or wired through Western Union or he will inflict harm on their loved one.

Police say that in each instance, all of the claims have proven to be false. If you receive a similar call, police say not to pay the individual, but instead, check on your loved one and contact local police, providing the telephone number.
