      New York college graduates average $26,000 in debt, a look at how CNY colleges compare

      The Obama administration says about 1.4 million undergraduate students are enrolled in colleges across New York and those who borrowed money for tuition will graduate with more than $26,000 in debt.

      President Obama will outline his agenda to combat rising college costs Thursday at appearances in Buffalo and at Syracuse??s Henninger High School. He'll conclude his upstate New York bus tour Friday with an appearance at Binghamton University.

      A release from the White House Thursday says Obama's plan will measure college performance through a new rating system and tie financial aid to college performance. His plan would also allow borrowers to cap their loan payments at 10 percent of their monthly income.

      The President is expected to highlight the Say Yes to Education Program during his speech in Syracuse, touting the city's program as a national model.

      According to the White House??s College Score Card, the following is a look at Le Moyne College, Syracuse University, SUNY Oswego, SUNY-ESF, Cornell University, Colgate University and Ithaca College.

      Syracuse University has the highest costs per year, and SUNY Oswego has the lowest costs. SUNY Oswego graduates are more likely to default on their Federal loans within the first three years after graduation, and Cornell University graduates are least likely to default. Syracuse University students have the highest median Federal barrowing amount and Cornell has the lowest.

      Le Moyne: Tuition costs $23,174 per year; graduation rate is 72.3%; 5.4% of Federal student loan borrowers defaulted within 3 years; median Federal student loan borrowing amount is $22,125.

      Syracuse University: Tuition costs $27,994 per year; graduation rate is 80.2%; 3.9% of Federal student loan borrowers defaulted within 3 years; median Federal student loan borrowing amount is $24,300.

      SUNY Oswego: Tuition costs $13,818 per year; graduation rate is 57.4%; 7.6% of Federal student loan borrowers defaulted within 3 years; median Federal student loan borrowing amount is $19,476.

      SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF): Tuition costs $15,565 per year; graduation rate is 65.8%; 3.9% of Federal student loan borrowers defaulted within 3 years; median Federal student loan borrowing amount is $17,372.

      Cornell University: Tuition costs $24,249 per year; graduation rate is 93.5%; 1.6% of Federal student loan borrowers defaulted within 3 years; median Federal student loan borrowing amount is $12,000.

      Colgate University: Tuition costs $18,647 per year; graduation rate is 91.6%; 3% of Federal student loan borrowers defaulted within 3 years; median Federal student loan borrowing amount is $18,500.

      Ithaca College: Tuition costs $31,811per year; graduation rate is 73.6%; 3.2% of Federal student loan borrowers defaulted within 3 years; median Federal student loan borrowing amount is $23,500.

      Obama is scheduled to speak at the University at Buffalo at 11:15 and at Henninger High School in Syracuse at 6 p.m.
