The sale of two nuclear power plants in Oswego County has been approved.

The New York State Public Service Commission approved Constellation Energy's plan to sell Nine Mile Point Unit 1 & Unit 2 to Exelon.

The sale is part of a plan to merge the two companies. The deal also includes Rochester's Ginna nuclear power station.

The transaction is valued at $8 billion.

Exelon is one of the largest nuclear power companies in the country owning 17 plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

That company also owns dozens of fossil and renewable fueled electric generation facilities.

James Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power Plant is the third reactor at Nine Mile Point.

It is still owned by Entergy and is not impacted by the transaction.
