Official calls for second spray of Cicero Swamp

Cicero Legislator Tim Burtis is calling for the county to put up money for a second aerial spray of the Cicero Swamp if it is needed.

"I am asking for $42,100 to administer a second aerial spraying," Said Burtis. He went to explain that the money is already available in the county budget.

Burtis explained the first step in the process is for the Health Committee to approve the request.

A vote to approve a secondary spray can be expected as soon as Aug. 4, according to Burtis.

The swamp was sprayed Friday night, nearly a week after mosquitoes in the area tested positive for West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus.

So far, there have been no reported cases of West Nile or EEEV in humans this year.

Health officials urge community members to take the proper precuations when participating in outdoor activities.

They recommend wearing shoes and socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when outside for an extended period of time. It is also recommended people use mosquito repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535 to prevent bites.
