One person is dead and eight people are injured after a van overturned on the Thruway in central New York, shutting down an eastbound stretch of the highway for hours and backing up traffic for miles.
Witnesses tell State Police the van carrying nine people drove off the shoulder into a dirt median, re-entered the road, and overturned several times before coming to a rest just after 1 p.m. Sunday.
Police say a passenger, 67-year-old Tanya Evans, of Annandale, Va., was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, identified as 42-year-old Jennifer Hodson, of Houston, Texas, and seven passengers were hospitalized with unknown injuries.
The accident closed all eastbound lanes between Exit 34A at Chittenango and Exit 30 about 55 miles east at Herkimer for four hours.
