One teen dead and another injured after falling off cliff at Salmon River Falls

A Parish teen is dead and another teen was taken to the hospital falling off a cliff at Salmon River Falls in Oswego County around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Deputies say a 15-year-old girl reported that two of her friends had fallen over the waterfalls in the town of Orwell.

Deputies say Michael Peters, 19, had climbed over the railing at the observation deck to get a better view of the falls when he slipped and fell over 100-feet into the water below.

17-year-old Kelton Lewis, of Pulaski, reportedly attempted to help Peters; however, he also slipped and fell over the falls. Lewis was able to get out of water and was found by emergency crews. He was transported to Upstate University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies say rescue divers recovered Petersâ?? body in 10 feet of water at the base of the falls. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was transported to the Onondaga County Medical Examinerâ??s Office.

The DEC says the trail is closed after dark and the teens should not have been at the park. They say it is against the law for anyone to come with 15 feet of the falls.
