Onondaga Co. to pay $385,000 in jailed pregnant woman death

Onondaga County will pay $385,000 to the mother of a pregnant woman who died at the Justice Center.

The county will pay $380,000 for the suffering Cheunice Patterson endured and $5,000 to compensate for her wrongful death.

It comes just a few months after the county admitted its employees' negligence caused Patterson's death. The 21-year-old died at the Onondaga County Justice Center from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Patterson had complained of shortness of breath while she was in her jail cell and later died.

In 2010, the New York State Commission of Correction issued a report concerning Patterson's death. The reports stated that, "had Patterson received adequate and competent medical care, her death would have been prevented."
