Oriskany man accused of stealing mother's identity

An Oriskany man is accused of stealing the identity of his own mother.

27-year-old Michael Smithling is charged with identity theft, a felony.

State Police say they received a complaint from his mother, Mary Smithling, that a credit card account had been opened in her name without her knowledge or authorization. She also told police that more than $9,000 in charges had been made to the account over a 4 week period.

Michael Smithling was arraigned in New York Mills Village Court. He was sent to the Oneida County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash
