The investigation into the drug overdose of a 20-month-old child led to the arrest of the childâ??s parents.
The investigation started on August 23 when the 20-month-old baby girl overdosed at her home in the Town of Coventry, Chenango County.
The baby ingested illegal opiates and un-prescribed controlled substances, according to State Police. They say the parents did not intentionally give the drugs to the child, but say the "household was unsafe," and the pills were easily accessible to the child.
The baby was treated at Wilson Memorial in Binghamton, and was then transferred to University Hospital where she was treated and released.
The investigation led to the arrest of 32-year-old Christopher L. Byrne and 23-year-old Casey M. Jones, the babyâ??s parents.
They were each charged with first degree reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawfully growing cannabis and three counts of possession of a controlled substance outside its original container.
Both were arraigned and taken to the Chenango County Jail. Byrne is being held on $15,000 cash bail and Jones is being held on $10,000 cash bail.
Troopers did not indicate who has custody of the baby.
