The building was generally known as The Owlâ??s Nest, and had just been renovated prior to flooding back in May when it partially collapsed. All but sealing the buildingâ??s fate before it completely collapsed on Saturday.
â??It sounded like an earthquake,â?? said Robert Champlin, owner of Lloyds Limited Pub tells our sister station WHAM. â??The power was down for a while, part of my building was hit and my hood fan was busted.â??
Champlinâ??s bar is right around the corner near the building that collapsed. He described the pre-demolition preparations.
â??He [the contractor] took one part of the wall off and the weight just kind of carried it over,â?? he said. â??It knocked over two electricity poles with transformers, you could hear all this popping.â??
Penn Yan Mayor Leigh Mayor Leigh MacKerchar said the building was in worse shape than originally thought.
â??Hindsight is always good, but nobody got hurt,â?? he told WHAM, referring to the collapse and debris. â??In the grand scheme of things it shouldnâ??t take too long to clean up at all, maybe by the end of the week.â??
