Pennellville woman dead after car-SUV crash on Route 31

Police investigate the crash scene Monday afternoon.

A Pennellville woman is dead after a two-vehicle crash on Route 31 in Clay Monday afternoon.

The Onondaga County Sheriffâ??s Office says 25 year-old Christine Knighton was driving a Hyundai east on State Route 31 around 12:45 p.m. when lost control on icy pavement and crossed into the west bound lane. Knighton's Hyundai was then struck on the passenger side by a Dodge SUV. Deputies say Knighton's car then hit a telephone pole before coming to a stop.

The crash took place near the intersection with Henry Clay Boulevard. Knighton was extracted from her car and taken by ambulance to Upstate Medical Center where she died from her injuries. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.

A driver of the SUV suffered no apparent injuries and his passenger suffered a non life-threatening injury to the leg. Both were taken by ambulance to Crouse Hospital.

The accident is still under investigation.
