State Senator Mark J. Grisanti (R,I - Buffalo) started a petition in opposition to Governor Andrew Cuomo's plan to give free college to state prison inmates.
The petition, titled "Say 'NO' To Free College For Prisoners" was started because Grisanti says, "I cannot in good conscience support the Governor's plan when so many individuals and families in New York are struggling to meet the ever-rising costs of higher education."
The program would offer associate's and bachelor's degree education at 10 prisons, which Cuomo says will reduce the likelihood of inmates returning to crime. He proposes spending about $5,000 a year for an inmate's education.
