The news of the Bayberry location of Friendly's abrupt closure this week surprised customers and employees, but the Town of Clay Planning Board knew for months that the ice cream shop would be converted to a Moe's Southwest Grill.
The Planning Board has been reviewing plans since at least May for changes to the existing Friendy's site at 7558 Oswego Road . The plans include outdoor patio seating, possible changes to the roof line and an addition of stone wrapping on the building.
Questions about traffic and a need for additional parking spaces are being explored. A consultant for the Moe's development, Robert Trybulski, has been appearing before the Planning Board to address the concerns and explain the project. An attorney for Dr. Steven Klink, who owners the chiropractic practice next door, has raised some questions about how customers will enter and exit the Moe's parking lot.
It is not clear when final approval for the Moe's project will come if all concerns are met. Moe's restaurant has been looking to expand in New York State. It currently has locations in Dewitt, Camillus and Cicero.
The property is still owned by Kessler Family LLC which announced this week it was selling most of its Friendly's franchises to the Friendly's Corporation while choosing to close eight in Upstate New York including Liverpool, Fayetteville, Oneida, Rome and Cortland.
