Police canine attacked investigating possible burglary-in-progress

Syracuse Police say one of its canines was attacked while investigating a possible burglary-in-progress at 608 Carbon Street at around 1:30 on Saturday afternoon.

Officials say a pitbull came out of an open door, attacking a police canine checking the exterior of the residence.

When police could not get the pitbull to release its hold on the canine, the officer was forced to shoot, killing the pitbull. The canine sustained minor injuries.

At the same time, police say a man with an assault rifle came out of the home and approached police.

When officers drew their weapons, the man surrendered. That man, 23-year-old Gaetano Colozzi, was not charged, but his rifle was taken.

An investigation also found that no burglary was in progress.
