Police: Weekend attack on teenage girl on Hopper Road is 'a scary incident'

Syracuse Police are calling Saturday's attack on a woman on Hopper Road "troubling."

Now days later, they continue to scour the city for the man who came up behind a teenage girl and threatened her with a knife. Police say the victim was walking on Hopper Road toward the entrance of the Rand Tract Nature Area around 7 a.m. Saturday, when she was approached from behind by the male attacker.

Police Sgt. Rick Helterline says this is a very unusual crime for Syracuse, as well as for the victim involved.

"She does not know who he is. She's never seen him before, and this is as much a surprise to her as she could be expected," Helterline said.

Police say a motive is unclear in the attack. The girl broke away from her attacker and the man took off.

"We don't know what his exact intent was, so that's what's partly troubling about all this," Helterline said. "It's definitely a scary incident. It's kind of secluded in parts of that area, so this could be a really bad situation if she didn't fight her way out of this."

Officers searched nearby Websters Pond down the street, which connects to the wooded nature park. That's where they believe the girl was headed that morning.

Now, police are praising the girl for her bravery.

"She screamed and she ran, so she was able to get away. And she lives nearby, she was able to get home," Helterline said. "She gave us a good description. We checked the area, we had canines and as many officers as we could get down there, but unfortunately we did not find him."

According to police, the victim described the suspect as a white male in his 50s, approximately six feet tall. He had noticeable wrinkles on his face, discolored teeth, and was wearing a white or gray colored zippered hooded sweatshirt, and a green colored mask that covered the lower portion of his face.
