T he man being talked about as a possible new member of President Obama's cabinet as the Secretary of Veteran Affairs has roots in Upstate New York. Dr. Delos "Toby" Cosgrove is the CEO of the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. He has frequently discussed healthcare issues with President Obama.
Dr. Cosgrove grew up in Watertown. The innovative cardiac surgeon holds some 30 patents for devices mostly related to open heart surgery. One example is an annuloplasty ring that sits in the mitral valve when to give a firm base from which to repair a valve weakened by a degenerative condition or infection.
He served as the Grand Marshall of Syracuse's St. Patrick's Parade in 1997 at the invitation of parade founder Nancy Duffy. Dr. Cosgove operated on Duffy's heart at the Cleveland Clinic when her mitral valve was failing.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting the Obama Administration is looking at Dr. Cosgrove as the top choice to head Veterans Affairs. He is a decorated Vietnam veteran who performed surgery in mobile hospitals during that war.
