Record number of tickets sold for SU-Georgetown game at Carrier Dome

Syracuse University has announced that the men's basketball game between long-time rivals Syracuse and Georgetown on February 23 has been sold out.

The total ticket count of 35,012 shatters the previous record for an on-campus college basketball crowd.

Saturday's pairing between #8 Syracuse and #11 Georgetown will be the final regular-season, BIG EAST Conference game at the Dome between the Orange and the Hoyas. Syracuse officially joins the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) on July 1, 2013.

For his last semester at SU, Sean Murphy is proving he is one dedicated orange fan.

"I might shower a couple times in the next few days, but other then that I'll probably be here other than being in class," says Murphy.

Murphy and his friend, Cory Bonondona have been camping outside the dome since 9:00 a.m. Tuesday and plan on sleeping in a tent outside for the next four days.

"It's also the last time Syracuse will play Georgetown in the Big East so I definitely want to be close to the action. They're also retiring Carmelo Anthony's jersey at the game so I definitely want to see that up close," says Murphy.

"We might never play them in the Carrier Dome again so just trying to be up close. It's going be a fun game, hopefully a good game. Hopefully we win obviously," says Bonondona.

Staff at the Dome are preparing for a busy week. With three games in the next few days they expect to see around 60,000 people packing into the building over the next week.

To accommodate the crowds, Managing Director of the Carrier Dome, Peter Sala says they will open two hours before the game. Typically they only open an hour and a half early.

"We'll have the entire dome open at 2:00 p.m. With the changes that have happened at the dome, we're urging people to park at Skytop and get here early," says Sala.

But no one is arriving earlier than Murphy and Bonondona.

"It's raining now and we're out here so I don't think it will stop us," says Murphy.

"Ideally I'd like to make as many classes as possible but we'll see. I already missed one today," says Bonondona.

Because for these number one fans, cheering on the Orange is their number one priority.

The February 23 contest will mark the 72nd time the Dome has welcomed a crowd greater than 30,000 for a Syracuse basketball game. Georgetown has been the opponent on 17 of those occasions (including this year's).

The fan total of 35,012 surpasses the mark of 34,616 set on February 27, 2010 when the Orange hosted Villanova.

The Georgetown game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and will be televised nationally by CBS. Former Syracuse standout Carmelo Anthony will have his jersey retired in a ceremony at the game.
