      Red flag warning for parts of southern New York

      A red flag warning is in effect for Chenango, Otsego, and southern Herkimer counties and into eastern New York and the Catskills between 11am and 8pm Thursday.

      A red flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, very low relative humidity, and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Therefore, outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.

      If your area has a red flag warning, here is what you should do :-- Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged as fires could very quickly become out of control. If your-- Do not discard cigarettes or matches outside. These can also quickly start a fire.-- Have a battery operated radio, and several flashlights available and in working order.-- If you see a fire, please report it to the proper authorities and stay a safe distance away It may quickly spread due to gusty winds.-- Keep your phone with your CNYcentral mobile app turned on so if additional warnings are issued, you will know.-- Periodically check NBC-3, CBS-5 and CW-6 for updates on the weather and additional warnings.
