Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle's office was closed this afternoon after a "suspicious communication."
CNY C entral spoke with a representative from the Syracuse bureau of the FBI, who confirms the congresswoman's office received a letter earlier today. FBI agents would not go into more details about what was in that letter.
S taff members at Rep. Buerkle's office tell us the office was shut down from about 2:30 until 4:30 this afternoon.
B uerkle released a statement saying her staff reacted appropriately by contacting local emergency responders. She says, "I am very troubled by this incident, which threatened not only members of my congressional staff, but also postal workers, building workers, and tenants. My staff and I are grateful for the professsionalism and responsiveness of the various local and federal law enforcement and emergency response authorities."
The Syracuse Police Department did initially respond to the call at Rep. Buerkle's office, but then handed the investigation over to the FBI.
