Retired Syracuse firefighter pleads guilty to child porn charges

      Mark Raite

A retired Syracuse firefighter is expected to spend seven years in prison for child pornography. 51 year-old Mark Raite pled guilty on Wednesday in Onondaga County Court to promoting sexual performance by a child, a felony.

The Onondaga County District Attorney's Office said Raite's plea will allow him to avoid facing federal child porn charges with stiffer penalties. Raite had been a Syracuse firefighter since 1987.

The D.A.'s Office says Raite retired from the fire department on August 2, a week before has was arrested and charged with possessing a sexual performance by a child and promoting a sexual performance by a child.

The investigation started three months before his arrest. The D.A.'s Office said Sheriff's deputies raided Raite's home on June 6 and took a computer with video and images of child pornography after an undercover police officer had downloaded child pornography from the computer.
