Retired Syracuse firefighter sentenced for possessing and sharing child porn

Mark Raite, a retired Syracuse firefighter, sentenced for possessing and sharing child porn.

A retired Syracuse firefighter will spend the rest of the decade in prison for possessing and sharing child pornography.

51-year-old Mark Raite appeared in Onondaga County Court Monday morning to be sentenced on a charge of felony promoting sexual performance of a child. Judge Joseph Fahey sentenced Raite to seven years in prison after he previously pleaded guilty in December, 2013.

The Onondaga County District Attorney??s Office says Raite was found to have more than 10,000 images of child porn on his personal computer when his home was raided by sheriff??s deputies in June 2013. His guilty plea allows him to avoid facing stiffer federal penalties.

"I realize what I did was wrong. I take full responsibility for my actions," Raite said in court Monday morning.

Raite retired from the Syracuse Fire department in August 2013, a week before he was arrested and charged with possessing a sexual performance by a child and promoting a sexual performance by a child. He had been with the department since 1987.
