Rochester man drowns after jumping off bridge into Erie Canal

Authorities say 21-year-old man has drowned while swimming in the Erie Canal just outside Rochester.

Police tell local media that the man was with a group that was jumping off an old bridge Thursday afternoon in the town of Gates, just west of Rochester.

Officials say the man jumped into the water but never resurfaced.

Emergency crews were called to the scene, and the man's body was found 40 minutes later at the bottom of the canal in 10 feet of water.

Police say the man was from Rochester. His name hasn't been released.

Officials say it's dangerous to swim in the canal because of debris in the water and high walls along the waterway.
