Rodriguez's CNY family member speaks out after his arrest
SYRACUSE, N.Y. —
After a detailed search we were able to track down one of Rian Rodriguez's aunts, who lives in central New York.
Kim Bascome says she hasn't seen her nephew in about two years, but she is shocked to hear the news.
She says she knew nothing about Rian and Caitlyn's relationship, and she did not wish to go on camera to talk about it.
She did provide a note with a statement from the family.
The note says that, "the family has been absolutely devastated by the events of the past week. We are thankful Caitlyn is being reunited with her family."
The note goes on to say, "we ask that you respect our privacy during this time."
According to Columbia County Sheriff deputies in Florida, Rodriguez's parents say he left Saturday November 25, to visit a friend in Lake City and never returned home.
Details of his relationship with 17-year-old Caitlyn still remain unclear but her father did find some lewd messages between the pair on Snapchat.
The two left a trail leading authorities here to central New York.
According to documents Caitlyn withdrew about $200 from an ATM in Georgia and then again on Monday in South Carolina.
The two were first located by authorities around 4 p.m. on Friday heading south on Taft Road in the Town of Salina, and they were eventually detained at the north plaza parking lot.
Right now Rodriguez has been charged with interference with custody of a minor and he is expected in court on Monday.
We'll be following this story and letting you know when we have more information.
