Rome double homicide suspect injured himself after allegedly killing the mother of his child, police say

Aaron Welch Sr.

Authorities say the Schenectady man

suspected of killing the mother

of his child and a friend who came to her aid is in serious condition with self-inflicted injuries.

Rome Police Department officials say 26-year-old Aaron Welch Sr. of Schenectady is under guard Wednesday at a local hospital. They say he used a sharp object to injure himself after fatally stabbing 22-year-old Stephanie Morrison and 31-year-old Shawn Kessler of Camden.

Police say Welch attacked Morrison in the doorway of her home as she returned from work early Tuesday morning. Kessler, one of two friends babysitting Morrison's young daughter, rushed to help the woman and was stabbed. He later died at a hospital.

The attack came just over 24 hours after Rome Police responded to a domestic incident between Morrison and Welch at 319 Myrtle Street, the

Utica Observer-Dispatch reports.

Welch was captured about five hours after the attack. Police say he hasn't been charged yet.
