Rome man arrested for assault after smashing man in face and head with a rock

A Rome man was arrested and charged with assault after Oneida County Sheriffâ??s Deputies say he smashed another man in the head with a rock.

Investigators say that a party on Star Hill Road in the Town of Steuben got violent at about 3am Saturday when 22-year-old Matthew J. Baker and the victim, Stephan Burke, got into an argument.

Deputies say Baker picked up a rock and smacked Burke in the head, knocking him out.

Baker then jumped on Burke and hit him several more times I the face and head while he was on the ground unconscious, according to deputies.

Baker ran into the woods, but turned himself into deputies when they arrived at the scene.

Burke was taken to St. Lukeâ??s Hospital, where he is being treated for face and head injuries.

Baker was charged with assault and is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
