Thu, 13 Jun 2013 19:53:13 GMT — U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Eric Shinseki, was in Syracuse on Thursday talking about programs to help veterans find jobs.Shinseki was part of a round table discussion at Fowler High School featuring Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, local veterans and businesses who are interested in hiring veterans.Unemployment for Iraq- and Afghanistan-era veterans has been stubbornly high for years.Shinseki says the government needs to do a better job of matching up veterans with the businesses who want to hire them. There is some good news, labor statistics show the unemployment rate for post 9/11 vets has dropped slightly from a high of nearly 12 percent last year to just over 7 percent this year.
