Route 34 bridge in Cayuga County shut down after crack discovered in support beam

Part of a major roadway in Cayuga County has been closed while state officials check the safety of a bridge.

The State Department of Transportation says State Route 34 bridge over the Seneca River has been closed until further notice while inspectors check on a crack found in a support beam. The DOT says an inspection Wednesday morning revealed the crack, and the bridge was closed to traffic around 12:15 p.m. The bridge is located just north of Weedsport at the Cato and Brutus town lines.

3,000 drivers cross teh bridge on an average day.

The DOT says traffic is being detoured using Route 31, Route 38, and Route 370.
