Salina man sentenced to 18 years for beating death of toddler

An Onondaga County man will spend the better part of the next two decades in prison for beating a toddler to death on New Yearâ??s Eve.

In Onondaga County Court Friday morning, Judge Joseph Brunetti sentenced 22-year-old Sharif Hamilton of Salina to 18 years in prison for the death of two-year-old Danielle Cashaw of Enders Drive. Hamilton was accused of shaking the child and throwing her down into a playpen when she would not stop crying. He was also accused of tripping over the child and falling on top of her.

The incident took place on December 31, 2012 at an apartment at Orchard Estates in Mattydale where Hamilton was living with Cashawâ??s mother. The child died three says later at Upstate University Hospital. Hamilton was subsequently convicted of first degree manslaughter.

In court Friday, Hamilton apologized for his actions, saying "I'm sorry for what I've done. If I could take it back, I would."
