A Schenectady woman has been convicted in the beating death of her 8-year-old grandson.
Local media report that 43-year-old Gloria Nelligan was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter by a county court judge after a bench trial. Nelligan was the legal guardian Sha'hiim Nelligan, who authorities say was beaten repeatedly over 12 hours.
Prosecutors argued that Nelligan made the boy do pushups, beat him and tied him to a chair after he stole a pack of gum from a local store. They say she then waited too long to seek medical attention for the beaten boy.
Gloria Nelligan's lawyer said the boy's punishment was discipline.
