Seneca River unsanitary due to sewer failure in Lysander

Officials are warning neighbors in Lysander to avoid swimming, fishing and boating in the Seneca River.

Onondaga County officials are calling the Seneca River "unsanitary" after a sewer line failure on River Road in the Town of Lysander.

Officials say a sewer force line broke, causing a potential for contaminated water to flow into the river. Emergency crews are on the scene pumping water.

At this time, there is no threat to drinking water and there are no sewer backups, but neighbors are advised to avoid swimming, boating and fishing in the area.

An emergency notification was sent to 529 homes in the area surrounding the contamination.
