Sentencing has been delayed for a registered sex offender convicted of climbing a ladder an attempt to rape a sleeping neighbor last year.
45-year-old Ross Sanford, Jr. of Hickory Street in Syracuse is facing a possible life sentence for the attempted rape of a 21-year-old Syracuse woman back in July of 2012. Prosecutors say Sanford, who has prior burglary and sex abuse convictions, is a persistent violent felony offender and by law should face a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
Sanford was accused of climbing a ladder and entering the woman's bedroom while she was sleeping in an attempt to rape her. Police said at the time that Sanford removed his clothes and placed a towel over the woman's mouth and face to prevent her from screaming, but the woman was able to fight him off and call 911.
In Onondaga County Court Tuesday morning, Sanfordâ??s defense attorney Irene Flores asked Judge Joseph Fahey for more time to review the evidence. Fahey granted that request.
Sanford was designated a Level 3 sex offender for sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy in 1987.
The hearing has been rescheduled for Monday, December 16th at 2:00 p.m.
