Several missing after hot air balloon catches fire, crashes


A hot air balloon caught fire and crashed Friday evening in Virginia, officials said. The accident took place at the Meadow Event Park in Caroline County, Va., on the eve of Mid-Atlantic Balloon Festival. The first reports came in around 8 p.m. ET, authorities said.

Local reports indicate many people are unaccounted for after the balloon hit a power line and caught fire. Wittnesses say the balloon struck a power line and caught fire before ascending into the air. According to the Caroline County Sheriff's Office, some passengers were seen jumping from the balloon, while others remain unaccounted for. At this time it is not known how many people have been injured and how many are missing.
