Sex offender arrested for loitering near school

A level 3 sex offender is arrested for loitering near a school.

T erry Jandrew, 55, of Syracuse, was seen on property adjacent to school property, including near the East Syracuse Minoa School District offices and Woodland Elementary School several times in September, according to Manlius Police. Because of his conviction, Jandrew is not allowed to be in those areas.

L evel 3 is the classification given to sex offenders who are considered most likely to re-offend.

Superintendent Donna DeSiato says the district was notified that Jandrew would be visiting a relative in the area, so she said district officials were on heightened alert.

"It's very concerning because these are individuals who have a prior record that's certainly very egregious in regard to children, and we take the necessary actions...that will help to protect our children," says DeSiato.

She says she thinks the hard work of vigilant staff members and police officers helped keep Jandrew away from students. He is now facing loitering charges.

DeSiato says parents can use this as a learning opportunity for their children by talking to them about staying away from strangers. She also says the school has precautions in place. It uses security cameras and only has one point of entry at schools.
