'Sheer evil' of David Renz should lead to severe child porn sentence

David Renz led from court by State Police.

Federal prosecutors want a judge to sentence David Renz to between 30 and 70 years in prison for his conviction on child pornography charges. Documents filed with the court point to Renz's guilty plea to state charges of first degree murder and predatory sexual assault as reason for the federal court to be firm in its sentencing.

Last March, Renz stabbed to death Liverpool librarian Lori Bresnahan and sexually attacked a 10 year old girl who was with Bresnahan when Renz abducted them both at the Great Northern Mall.

U.S. Attorney Lisa Fletcher cites other violations of law by Renz as reason for a sentence more severe than the federal guidelines. Court documents indicate Renz tampered with this monitoring device, he planned his capture and attack of his victims and he also collected child pornography.

The court filings also detail Renz' sexual abuse of a minor when he was 15 years old. It describes his course of assault on the 8 year old girl over the course of one year. Renz served probation for that offense.

In the years that followed he collected child pornography that ultimately provided a model for his attack on the 10 year old girl last March.

Prosecutors conclude, " The sheer evil of the facts surrounding the defendant's forcible rape of the 10 year old child as a random, premeditated act of violence, while under court supervision for child pornography offenses, and culminating in a senseless murder, warrants a 3-level upward departure."

Two weeks ago the Federal Public Defender submitted a brief to the court that argued leniency for Renz due to social isolation as a child related to his facial deformity.

Federal sentencing is scheduled for March 11th.
