If two Syracuse common councilors have their way, smoking would be banned outdoors across several blocks of downtown.
Councilors Khalid Bay and Bob Dougherty have asked city lawyers to review a draft ordinance banning outdoor smoking in an area that stretches roughly from the Everson Museum past Columbus Circle to the Hotel Syracuse.
They are waiting to hear back from the attorneys before deciding whether to propose the ordinance to the full city council.
It it passes, enforcing the law, Dougherty told CNYCentral, would likely take time as people got used to the law.
In 2010, Ithaca passed a similar ordinance, banning outdoor smoking in the Ithaca Commons area.
